Why Rattan Is Different

Unlike wood, rattan is a vine. It grows up through the forest canopy without being cut at the roots. Harvesting rattan actively encourages new growth, making it one of the few furniture materials that genuinely benefits the ecosystem it comes from.

It is naturally lightweight, incredibly strong, and flexible enough to be shaped into intricate forms entirely by hand. The artisans who craft our rattan pieces train for years to master the bending, weaving, and finishing techniques that give each piece its character.

Rattan vs. Wicker: Rattan is the material, a natural vine. Wicker is the weaving technique. Many of our pieces use rattan woven in a wicker style, which is why the terms are often used interchangeably.

Care and Maintenance

Keep away from prolonged direct sunlight to prevent drying and cracking.

Wipe down with a slightly damp cloth for routine cleaning. Air dry completely.

For deeper cleaning, use a soft brush with mild soapy water and air dry fully.

Occasional linseed oil treatment maintains flexibility and natural luster.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is rattan furniture strong enough for daily use?
Yes. Properly cured and crafted rattan has a higher tensile strength-to-weight ratio than many hardwoods. Our rattan chairs and tables are built for everyday use.
What does FSC-certified actually mean?
It means the rattan was independently verified to come from a responsibly managed forest, audited by SCS Global Services under FSC-STD-40-004. Our certificate code is SCS-COC-700091 and is valid through January 2029. You can verify at info.fsc.org.
Where is our rattan made?
All East at Main rattan is sourced and handwoven in Indonesia, primarily in the Cirebon region of West Java, which is the global center of traditional rattan craft.
Can rattan be used outdoors?
Natural rattan is best suited for covered outdoor areas or indoors. For fully exposed outdoor use, look for synthetic rattan alternatives designed to withstand UV and moisture.
Will rattan crack or break over time?
With proper care, avoiding extreme dryness and direct sun, rattan furniture is very durable. Occasional light oiling keeps the fibers supple and prevents cracking.
