Furniture made from materials whose source can be documented and repeated without depleting it. In practice that means one of three things: rapidly renewable fibres, certified timber, or byproduct and upcycled material rather than newly felled hardwood. The term carries no legal definition, which is why a named material and a traceable source tells you more than the word itself does.

Start with what a brand will name. Ours runs on rapidly renewable fibres, handwoven rattan, abaca, seagrass and raffia; on mango wood, a byproduct of mango agriculture; and on recycled coconut shell, which uses material that food processing would otherwise discard. Nine pieces across the range carry FSC® certification and are listed in their own collection, and each material has a hub page setting out where it comes from. Check whether a certification named applies to a specific piece or only to part of a range, because that is where most claims fall apart.
