Sustainable Handwoven Abaca

Woven abaca furniture: five abaca coffee tables, three benches, a counter stool and an accent table. Abaca is a rapidly renewable fibre stripped from a banana relative grown in the Philippines, then handwoven over a frame.

What is abaca?

Abaca is a natural fibre taken from the leaf stalk of a plant related to the banana. The fibre is long and unusually strong, which is why it holds a shape under weight better than most soft weaves and why abaca furniture keeps its form. It is rapidly renewable: the plant is cut on a short cycle and regrows from the same stock. Tone varies between harvests, so two woven abaca pieces will not match exactly.

What is abaca used for?

In furniture it is handwoven over a frame to build table surfaces, bench seats and stool bases. The Liv Round Handwoven Abaca Coffee Table, the Maya Round Handwoven Abaca Coffee Table and the Naomi Square Handwoven Abaca Coffee Table cover the shapes. For seating, the Daria Handwoven Abaca Upholstered Storage Bench and the Naomi Handwoven Abaca Upholstered Bench work at the end of a bed or in an entry. Outside furniture, the same fibre goes into rope, textiles and speciality papers, which is the clearest evidence of its strength.
